Vital signs monitoring at home

One blood pressure reading tells you about one moment. The trend line tells you where things are heading. Salus vital signs monitoring means professional measurements — blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, temperature, respiratory rate — taken by a licensed Firefighter/Paramedic who checks vitals for a living, recorded consistently, and tracked visit to visit.

Definition

What is in-home vital signs monitoring?

In-home vital signs monitoring is the routine measurement of blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, temperature and respiratory rate in a person's own home. A licensed Firefighter/Paramedic records each reading the same way at every visit, so changes over time become visible. Salus measures, documents and refers — it does not diagnose or treat.

Readings are taken in the same chair at roughly the same hour — conditions a waiting room cannot reproduce. It is one strand of the wider in-home preventive care Salus brings to families across Miami-Dade and Broward. Vitals are also recorded inside every comprehensive wellness assessment and each post-hospital follow-up.

What we measure

The five measurements taken at every visit

Each is read alongside the others. What matters is whether a figure sits where that person's readings usually sit.

Blood pressure

Taken with a correctly sized cuff, seated and rested. A move away from their usual range is worth showing their doctor.

Heart rate

Rate and rhythm, felt by hand as well as read from a monitor. An irregular pulse is noted and flagged, not interpreted.

Oxygen saturation

Read with a fingertip pulse oximeter. Families managing a lung or heart condition often want this one watched closely.

Temperature

Measured the same way each visit and written down — a shift from someone's usual reading is easier to see on paper than by touch.

Respiratory rate

Counted over a full minute rather than estimated. Breathing that has become faster or more effortful is easy to miss.

The core idea

Why one reading tells you less than a trend

A number taken once, in an unfamiliar room after a drive and a wait, is a snapshot. It describes one minute. It cannot tell you which direction anything is moving.

Readings taken in the same home, week after week, establish what is usual for that person and make a departure from it obvious. A blood pressure that has climbed gradually across six visits is different information from one high reading on one afternoon. We never present a trend as a diagnosis — we record it accurately and put it in front of the people qualified to read it. Our guide to your parent's blood pressure numbers covers what families can track between visits, and wellness monitoring keeps the line running long enough to mean something.

The record

How readings are recorded and shared

  • Measured the same waySame equipment, position and order, so one visit compares fairly with the last.
  • Written down in the roomDocumented during the visit, not reconstructed from memory afterwards.
  • Shared with the familyA plain-language summary goes to whoever you nominate.
  • Ready for the physicianHand it straight to their doctor's office.

If something looks off

If a reading sits outside their usual range

We recheck it. A single odd figure is often the cuff, the position, or someone who has just walked in from the yard. If it holds on a second measurement, we document it plainly, tell you what we saw, and advise contacting their physician. That referral is where our role ends — Salus does not diagnose the cause of a reading, adjust a medication, or begin treatment.

Our visits are scheduled and preventive. They are not an emergency service and are no substitute for one. If someone becomes acutely unwell between visits, call 911.

Questions

Vital signs monitoring, answered

Home cuffs are useful when used correctly and consistently. We bring clinical technique, correct cuff sizing, and a documented record your loved one's doctor can use.

That depends on the person and what their physician has asked for. Someone recently discharged may want visits closer together at first. We suggest a cadence and adjust it with you.

We tell you what we measured and whether it differs from their own previous readings. What a number means clinically is their physician's judgement — we hand over the record so it can be made well.

Yes. The written summary goes out after each visit, wherever family live.
